Background & Context 

A major player in the beverage industry faced a significant challenge: the need to consolidate 15 different business operating integration contexts into a unified system. This consolidation was necessary across various key performance indicators (KPIs), involving 3PL Logistics, Financial (payment and invoice), and E-commerce business lines within a mixed JDE and Microsoft ERP environment. 

Challenges

The primary challenge was to reduce complexity, duplication, and time to delivery in managing these integration contexts. The diverse and fragmented systems resulted in inefficiencies and increased operational costs, hindering the company’s ability to respond swiftly to market demands. 

Solutions & Strategies 

To address these challenges, the company embarked on a strategic initiative to streamline its integration architecture in Microsoft’s Azure cloud. The key to this transformation was the development of reusable “solution as code” modular components. This approach allowed for the design to be consolidated using a repeatable, low-cost asynchronous pattern.  This pattern was equally capable of ensuring near real-time data delivery and guaranteed delivery even when the 3rd party systems we were communicating with experienced message delivery delays or were attempting retries. 

The solution featured several innovative components: 

Extension of Endpoint and SFTP Delivery: This was driven by context-based configuration, allowing for greater flexibility and efficiency in data handling. 

Loosely Coupled Design: The modular plug-and-play replacement of data-ingestion, data-validation, and data-transformation steps, as well as processing-audit and monitoring solutions, facilitated easier maintenance and scalability. 

Mature Messaging Metadata Formats: The application of these formats enabled flexible reuse within and across common components for all data contexts, enhancing interoperability and reducing redundancy. 

YAML Driven Azure DevOps Pipelines: These pipelines maximized deployment, re-deployment, cloning, and cold-standby disaster recovery (DR) approaches, significantly reducing the time and effort required for these operations. 

Results & Outcomes 

Code redeployments were reduced from days to minutes, dramatically increasing the speed of operational adjustments and updates. 

Common components were reused consistently, contributing zero issues across the 15 diverse data delivery channels, thereby enhancing system reliability and performance. 

Integration project activity was reduced to the fundamentals of Endpoint Security and Data Transformation requirement specification and testing, focusing efforts on core operational needs and efficiency.
